I have been a gamer since my high school days, during the 56.6 k (the connection speed at that time provided by the infamous TMnet and also Jaring) era. It sux so much back then when you want to play online games especially Counter-Strike, the hottest game at that time. Luckily, some folks realize the potential of online gaming in Malaysia thus created a server for Counter-Strike. I think there were 2 servers at that time, one is from gamesLAH and another one is from TMnet. Fragging online had never been fun before the introduction of those 2 servers. But still, that time, those kids with rich parents obviously owns in these servers because they have the faster ISDN connection (also from the infamous TMnet) compared to the other people’s average 56.6 modem connection. Still, the fun is there and it had made countless kids wake up late for school!

Fast forward, to the present day, not much have changed. Our internet connection improved but hey, it is still at the same state. We got 1mbps (ermm, also from TMnet) broadband and maybe some lucky dudes get 2-4mpbs but compared to the rest of the world, this is a joke. Hey, the speed is quite ok actually even if it’s a bit more expensive than the other countries but it is not as good as it looks like. The connection is not stable and it jerks once in a while but the most important thing, connection with the outside world, plain sux. Recently, its more noticeable with more and more online games available to us, Malaysians. A game like World of Warcraft does not benefit us that much. We can only dream for our own servers just like the Aussies.

"Lucifer from MeetYourMakers (MYM) Warcraft III Team"

Nowadays, gaming is not just for the kids who want to waste their time, adults who wish to have fun or release their stress, or the oldies that dun have anything else to do except punching the buttons on the game pad. Gaming has becoming a sport of its own hence the word, cyber sport. It has evolved into a competitive state where people can survive with gaming. They can earn money and keep on living just by playing games. But does this option available in Malaysia? Sadly no. People still playing games for fun here in Malaysia.

But a lot of things have changed in Malaysia. There is some competitive scene here and there. With the World Cyber Gaming involvement and some major/minor tournaments held around Malaysia, there seem to be some hope for us, Malaysian gamers. If only more big companies support the gaming scene then it will truly become true, a competitive gaming scene in Malaysia! Malaysia have produce some big names in games like Counter-Strike and Warcraft (Dota All-Stars and melee) but when they have the chance to compete against another country, they don’t seem to perform well. It all leads back to the starting point, INTERNET CONNECTION!!

"Fnatic, a competitive counter-strike clan"

Why does the connection play a big role in competitive gaming besides sponsors from big companies? To become good in anything, you need experience and exposure. Does this ring a bell? Duh, to compete in major tournaments that involve other countries beside Malaysia, the competitors must know how other peoples play the game like example, whats their tactics and strategies or how do they manage their team and their teamwork in the game. We can learn a lot if only we have the same fair of opportunity like them. For starters, a fast and stable connection will enable Malaysian gamers to have friendly matches with the other countries and thus gain experience from them.

"Spawn from the famed counter-strike team, Schroet Kommando (SK)"

Gaming for a living (competitive gaming) in Malaysia will only become true if some (best if all) of the things I listed below happen in Malaysia.

- A fast and stable connection for the gamers so that they are able to have friendly matches, join online tourneys, actively training in a competitive state like the other countries for example, Korea and Sweden.

- Major companies like Intel, Amd or Dell sponsor teams in Malaysia. This will motivate them and they can concentrate more on gaming because their living depends on it.

- Government support of the gaming scene. Not just the major tournaments that will benefit them in term of money, but also the small tournaments.

- Bury the ‘gaming is bad for kids’ thinking.

- More tournaments held, be it by online or offline. A league will definitely bring in more interest from the community.

- A lot of coverage on the gaming scene especially on the television and newspaper.

There are also a lot of other facts to be taken account but for starters, this is enough for our lovely Malaysia.

Gamers wont go anywhere . We need MONEY for LIVING ! Wait for footballers became a profession , then only thinking of gaming as profession :))

  8. Anonymous // June 26, 2007 at 4:45 AM

there are a lot of tournaments that gamers can make money from. local tournaments of course. it will eventually grow. but unless players start to give commitment, it will just die or give way for others to reap the rewards. our people won't have their names carved as the pioneers of the gaming society because the ones that are actually good doesn't want to sacrifice a bit of their time and dedication. if we look back at our soccer players, even overseas, they started soccer without good pay, they even had side jobs. but they held on, and it became one of the most successful games on earth. we Malaysian are at the beginning just like when we were with soccer, yes, but until we have to sacrifice something, strive to excel for honor and glory, it will go nowhere. for me, a bad internet is not an excuse. there's a gaming world out there that's growing ever so large. it's up to us either to be part of it or to watch it pass us by. so the less people involved, the slower the development will be. in conclusion, orang kita lemah semangat, lemah daya saing dan asyik complain but tak buat ape ape to change. GG

its true bad internet connection is not an excuse as long as there is a will there is a way. but the only way you got is to upgrade/fix those blardy connection !! indeed, there is a competitive scene in Malaysia but then, think about it. mostly, its just for Dota All-Stars. Counter-Strike hardly got any tournaments goin on. but according to the latest result from malaysian teams in mym pride #6, we can say its becoming better !

Owning for pc game!!! online game owning!!! For dota !!! for pandarian!!! Nice article because our culture thus the community here unlike Korean, They are really dare to strike /gg

  14. Anonymous // June 26, 2007 at 3:42 PM

what happened to counter-strike will happen to dota. sooner or later there will come a team that will become temporarily unbeatable because of their commitment to win. when that time comes, it's up to the other talented players to fight. but if the reign of one team becomes permanent for whatever reason(the only one i can think of is that the other teams don't become as serious), people will start to lose interest. and the public interest in dota will slowly fade away. just like counter-strike. and then the tournaments will start to lessen because of the lack of the average gamer. the pro teams with backing will of course still be playing tournaments and will represent our country, but it won't progress any further because there's no rivalry. everybody just takes the easy way out and quits/content to just spectating. CCs can't profit from spectators so they will start to stop hosting anymore tournaments. no tournaments, goodbye pro gaming

i guess everyone discriminates, i mean we judge people and we apply our judgement into actions …we simply discriminates. ive known many people who discriminates against malays too, but only because they generalised malays to be lazy and incompetent. racism is probably an act of judging people by the bulk according to skin color (coz its the easiest way).

our friend BUSTER is probably lazy and incompetent and he probably blames the malay for that, but thats ok to me…..however if he uses the Quran to justify his ideas and to win support, it makes him a dangerous bastard.

    no malay please..

I would say gamers in Malaysia need better support from the sports ministry. Especially clans who've reached a certain qualifications.

For instance, if the clan has won Top 3 in the WCG then they should be given RM1000 per month spenditure. How you use your money is your choice.

In terms of practice, a professional cybercafe should be built for the top 5-10 clans in the country where they can constantly tour the country to game against each other.

All in all, without the Internet connection and more support like the above, the government should allocate at least RM5 million.

The other big problem in Malaysia is the culture. No sponsor wants to sponsor a loser. As in if you're not in the Top 5, they would rather go with another clan who's already got countless sponsors.

Our culture sucks in that view.

Imo, every niche activity in Malaysia requires support due to the fac that the majority of Malaysians are lowest in terms of appreciation towards these activities.

Take gaming, majority feels that it's a waste of time, boring, and probably a waste of money. As a gamer, gaming itself is intellectual bliss, but the general population of our country might still feel gaming has similar quantity of fun as choral speaking.

Every little activity/scene in Malaysia often get lashed out as lame and slowly dies or just stay niche; skateboarding, surfing(lol), gaming..

So far, growth for gaming is just an illusion, drawn by small time sponsors for advertisements, games are still labeled as hobbies in Malaysia.

If we had a bigger population, or high appreciation, or it can just be summed up that our multi cultural society lacks IT literacy.

If TMnet raises the bar for our internet speed, customers don't have the mental capacity to appreciate the technology yang canggih, "I just check my email lah". God knows how many percent of the population even subscribes streamyx at all..Most of them don't even know they're own IP address let alone speed!

Good read, I might get a hate novel published if i continue. :P

Im a person that play games competitively and i won a few tournaments too. I always have the problem getting a stable & smooth game. We cannot do anything about it. Broadband service currently monopolized by the 'infamous' TMnut. All we have to do is forget about the term 'pro-gaming' and go look for some new idea to earn money. Malaysia will never have a good and fair price broadband service until goverment do something about 'release the copperline to the access of other telco'. I really do not know why TMnut charging so high for monthly usage and yet cant deliver a better service to all of us. The quality of service drop year after year.

TKO, me love you long time.

  31. Anonymous // June 27, 2007 at 2:14 PM

yes ammar, that's exactly what i mean. there's lack of passion in the game. i consider tds to be one of the top malay clans out there, playing with the top chinese clans and regularly play friendly clan matches, and probably one of the malay clans that actually have a shot at seeding top 5. but apparently that doesn't mean anything to them. no involvement, no commitment, no passion. if you regard gaming as a hobby, please don't call yourself a gamer. for me, hobby and interest are distinctive. interest is what makes you a pro gamer

about the supports needed for this society. i think the malays need to be involved in the scenes first. without malays in the tournaments winning, i don't think the government will pay much attention. it's not that i want to be racist, but this is reality. the chinese are winning now, and i've never seen any support other than the sponsors that only think about making money for themselves. just like bowling a few years back. i remember that there was very little news on the papers about bowling. but the enthusiasts were hard at work practicing and winning games. when shazlina(not sure about the name) won and became malaysia's best. she caught a lot of attention on to the game, and look at it now. it's of Malaysia's most covered and backed(supported) game. the malays need to pave the road yet again for gaming to be recognized.

so the problem lies within the people themselves. either be part of a glorious campaign. or become caught up in the simple pleasures of life that isn't even condoned by Islam(gf, parties, drugs, drinking, etc)

p.s: if there was any trace of racism, i'm very sorry. i only said what i had to say for the sake of discussion

  32. Anonymous // June 27, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Well, when you really think back about it, gaming is all about the passion and glory of pwning.

Passion is about the feeling in your gut that you crave when you and your mates obliterate that opposing team. Glory comes together with recognition. Recognition is just a title you get from winning.

So, where does money come into play? Simple, from sheer volume. Now, when hundreds of teams compete for the ultimate title (passion, glory and recognition), related businesses come racing in for endorsements. Basically, it all sums up to this: to get $$$ you need volume. Example: mYm.

Now, if all this were to be at an international level, patriotism will fuel the fire further. But things have to start somewhere. I'm sure we have enough players here in Malaysia to create an event of such magnitude. Where bandwidth doesn't matter as much and pride & glory is at stake.

If you guys are half as passionate as you sound, don't you think it's about time we put the money where our mouths are and take this matter into our own hands?

yeah u r right! the sports ministry should support the gaming scene. they should have sponsored atleast top 3-5 teams. This will encourage more gamers to be actively involve in competitive gaming thus making it large here in Malaysia

    @ ammar
hehehe, but your view is an interesting view on the problems we have as a gamer in Malaysia. People tend to think that playing games is a waste of time. Thats where we need to make known the competitive gaming scene here so that people can be aware of it

I leave a response whenеver I eѕpecіаllу enjoy a artiсle on а webѕite
or I haνe something to aԁd to the ԁiscussion.

Іt's caused by the sincerness displayed in the post I browsed. And after this article "Why gaming for a living in Malaysia will have no future! Atleast for 2-3 more years!". I was excited enough to post a comment :-) I actually do have a few questions for you if it's okay.
Ϲould it bе just me or does іt lоok as if
like а feω οf the remarkѕ cоme across
like they are left by braіn deаԁ indivіdualѕ?

:-P And, if уou are writing аt adԁitionаl sοcіаl siteѕ, I
